Kitchen and Bathroom Remodel Cost in Los Angeles: What Shapes Your Price

5 min read

If you're planning a new kitchen or bathroom, cost is usually the first question. It's a fair one. These are the rooms you use most every day, and they're full of plumbing, wiring, cabinets and finishes that all add up.

The honest answer is that kitchen and bathroom remodel cost in Los Angeles depends on your home, your layout and the choices you make. In this guide, we'll walk through what actually shapes the price, share the starting prices we can confirm, and explain what those numbers do and don't include.

Our Starting Prices (and What They Mean)

Here's what we can share today:

  • Kitchen remodels start at $35,000 for a regular-size kitchen.

  • Bathroom remodels start at $16,000 for a regular-size bathroom.

Please read this part carefully. These are build-only starting prices. Design and permits are extra. A starting price is not a quote. Your final price is set in your written estimate, after we've seen your space and talked through your plans.

We share starting prices so you can plan, not so you're surprised later. Every home is different, and we'd rather explain that up front.

What Shapes Kitchen Remodel Cost

Keeping or changing the layout

The biggest question is whether things stay where they are. Refreshing a kitchen in its current layout is a very different project from moving the sink, adding an island or taking out a wall. Removing or changing a wall can also mean structural work and more review from the city.

Moving plumbing or gas lines

Sinks, dishwashers and gas ranges are tied to lines in the walls and floor. Keeping them in place keeps the work simpler. Moving them means opening up more of the room and running new lines.

Cabinets

Cabinets are often one of the biggest choices in a kitchen. Stock, semi-custom and custom cabinets differ in materials, sizes and lead times, and the number of cabinets your layout needs matters too.

Countertops

Countertop material, the amount of counter space, and details like edges and cutouts for sinks and cooktops all affect the price.

Appliances

Are you keeping your current appliances or choosing new ones? Some appliances also need a dedicated circuit, a gas line or venting, which ties into the next item.

Electrical upgrades

New lighting, more outlets and new appliances can all add electrical load. Many older Los Angeles homes have panels that weren't built for today's kitchens, so some need an electrical upgrade. We can't know what your home needs until we look.

In older homes, opening the walls can also reveal things no one could see before, like old wiring or damaged framing. A careful plan allows for that. Learn more on our kitchen remodeling page.

What Shapes Bathroom Remodel Cost

Tub-to-shower conversions

Swapping a tub for a walk-in shower is one of the most common requests we hear. It usually involves new drain work, new waterproofing, tile and a shower door or glass.

Tile

The type of tile, how much of the room you tile, and the pattern all make a difference. Small tiles and detailed patterns take more time to install than simple layouts.

Fixtures

Vanities, sinks, faucets, shower valves and toilets come in a wide range of styles and quality levels. You get to choose where to spend and where to save.

Waterproofing

This is the part you don't see after the job is done, and one of the most important. Showers need a proper waterproofing system behind the tile. Done right, it protects your walls and floors from water damage.

Moving the toilet or drain

Like a kitchen, a bathroom is simpler when fixtures stay where they are. Moving the toilet or a drain can mean opening the floor and rerouting pipes.

Ventilation

Bathrooms need good ventilation to manage moisture. Adding or upgrading an exhaust fan may also involve electrical work and venting to the outside.

Permits: What to Know

Many kitchen and bathroom remodels need permits, especially when plumbing, electrical or structural work is involved. Where your permit comes from depends on where you live.

  • City of Los Angeles: permits go through the Los Angeles Department of Building and Safety (LADBS). LADBS offers Express Permits for several smaller projects, including kitchen and bathroom remodels. More complex work, such as structural changes, may need plan check, where the city reviews your plans before a permit is issued.

  • Other cities: if your home is in another city, or in unincorporated LA County, that jurisdiction has its own building department and its own process.

  • Inspections: once work starts, the city inspects it at different stages, and a final inspection closes out the permit.

The city makes the final permit decision. We'll walk you through what applies to your project.

How a Written Estimate Works

A starting price helps you plan. A written estimate is where your real number is set. After we've seen your space and talked through your goals, we put the details on paper. A clear estimate should cover:

  • The scope of work: what we're doing, room by room

  • Materials and specifications

  • Allowances for items you'll choose later, like tile or fixtures

  • What's not included

  • The expected schedule

  • How changes are handled if you change your mind or we find something behind a wall

If an estimate doesn't explain these things, ask. You should know what you're paying for before work begins.

Our Process

  1. Free, no-obligation consultation. We talk about your goals, look at your space and answer your questions.

  2. Design. We offer design in-house or with trusted partners.

  3. Permits. We prepare what the city needs and handle the permit process.

  4. Build. Our crew does the work, with city inspections along the way.

  5. Final inspection. We schedule the city's final inspection, which closes out the permit.

Planning an ADU Instead?

If you're thinking bigger, like a garage conversion or a new backyard unit, ADU costs work very differently. Read our guide to ADU cost in Los Angeles, or visit our ADU services page.
